How safe is your SAFE?

Article by Ralph Dobson, Security Consultant.

With the influx of low cost, non- graded light-weight security products, it becomes ever more important to know what to look for when purchasing a safe.

Basically a safe should be designed to resist unauthorized entry. Attempted entry could mean manipulation of the lock or a physical attack using any number of tools. The quality of your safe will only become relevant at the time of attack. All safes are effective for storing valuables; it is only when they are attacked do you find out how good your safe really is.

A simple light-weight home safe is not going to provide the protection required when storing larger amounts of cash or valuables, even at home. A light commercial safe may suit a small business that banks daily, but may not be secure enough for sites that bank infrequently.

As a simple rule of thumb, the heavier the safe the better it is. Did you know that the lightest security safe Chubb Lock & Safe stocks weighs in at 120 kilograms? Even then we recommend the safe is bolted down to deter attempted removal.

Chubb Lock & Safe offers security safes in all grades, from a simple Safe-Wise 25 Home Safe (13kg) through to the maximum security Chubbsafes Europa Grade 5 models that weigh in at nearly two tonnes. Give your local Chubb Lock & Safe branch a call and discuss what safe would best suit your security requirements before making a purchase.

Chubb Lock & Safe recently held demonstrations providing a graphic display of the different types of barrier material used in the Chubbsafes manufacturing process. The photo on the left shows a panel filled with a low grade barrier which was breached using a simple sledge hammer after 20 blows. The photo on the right shows a panel of high-grade Chubbsafes barrier material after 80 blows. This simple test illustrates that the quality of a safe lies in the materials used in its construction - which is not always discernible to the naked eye. Chubbsafes carries out independent testing on its commercial models and each safe carries a certificate attributable to the grade passed. Chubb Lock & Safe in New Zealand has safes graded from 1 through to the high security grade 5.
